What it is

Midnight Watch is a gear puzzle about things that have stopped. The town clock has stood at 00:00 for forty years, and the town has been living around that stopped minute ever since. You come back to your grandmother’s shop and repair the watches customers leave behind.

Each watch has stopped at a particular minute: 00:01, 00:03, 00:07. Each repair moves the town clock back one minute. After twenty-four of them it rests at 00:24, waiting for you to decide whether it should run.

No timer, no fail state, no stamina. The only pressure is the board: gears are meshed, so moving one moves its neighbours too.

How a repair works

Click a gear: it turns 90° clockwise, and every meshed gear turns 90° the other way. Bring all red missing teeth back to twelve and the watch is done.

Every board has an exact shortest solution computed by BFS: par earns S, two extra moves earn A, five extra earn B, anything worse is C. The grade pays copper oil; it never blocks progress.

You can undo one move, buy a hint for 25 oil, or take the watch apart and start over. After watch 19, rusted gears appear: they cannot be clicked, but neighbours still turn them — the board stops being “each gear on its own” and becomes “decide who moves whom”.

24 watches, 4 chapters

Each main watch has an owner, a stopped minute, and one line of memory from the day it stopped. Repairing a watch is not collecting parts; it is putting one minute of someone’s life back.

The four chapters are Stopped, Habit, That Night and Grandmother: in year one the town still waits for the bell; by year three it has learned not to look at the clock; only in the last chapter do you learn why your grandmother stopped it.

Four special watches unlock through a return streak, repair count, S grades and upgrades. They sit outside the main line, but they show the other side of it.

Why every board is solvable

Boards are not hand-scattered: the game starts from a solved board and clicks it randomly a number of times. Since four clicks return a gear to where it began, a way back always exists.

The par is not the number of scramble clicks — that would make S unreachable. The game computes the true BFS shortest path for every board, every time.

The harness runs 720 boards: all solvable, par equal to BFS, grades and economy consistent. This is not “should be fine”; it runs on every build.

Oil, the daily order and special watches

Copper oil is the shop’s income and your budget for hints, the oil can (+30% per order) and the lamp (three hints). Today’s order pays triple, and returning on consecutive days builds a streak.

Special watches unlock through streak, repairs, S grades and upgrades. They do not demand grinding; they are five small doors for players who want to keep repairing. The fifth is not on that list: after all 24 main watches are repaired, one more appears at the back of the grandmother’s drawer, its inner lid engraved with a line she never handed over. It does not move the town clock; it only adds the last stroke to the main story.

Two endings wait after the last watch: let the clock run, or let it stay. There is no bad ending — only whether you are willing to make that decision for your grandmother.

How the numbers on this page are checked

The 24 main watches, 5 special watches, 4 chapters and 2 endings are in lingdian/src/data/watches.js; rotation, BFS par and S/A/B/C grading are in src/game/engine.js; oil and the daily order are in src/store.js.

The 720 solvable boards and 19 audit assertions are the result of `npm run audit` in the lingdian repo on 2026-10-20; the render gate is `npm run check:render`, run at desktop and 390×844 with a negative control.

The four screenshots were taken from the running game online on 2026-10-20. The hero image is an AI-generated illustration, labelled as such.

FAQ

Do I need an account or payment?
No. It runs free in the browser and never asks for personal information.

Can a board get stuck?
No. Every board is solvable; you can undo, buy a hint, or restart.

Does it need fast reactions?
No. It is a turn-based gear board with no timer.

How long is it?
24 main watches plus 5 special ones. You can repair many in one sitting; the special ones ask you to come back.

Which ending is the good one?
Neither. One lets the clock run, one leaves it at 00:24; both are decisions made for your grandmother.

Where is progress saved?
