What the 'Frequency' in Room 404 Actually Is: Two 03:04 Broadcasts and Carrier 013

Build checked: the live rewrite of 2026-10-26. The old version of this article described the true ending as "seven worlds resonating at 18.98 Hz." That was leftover from the previous canon. The rewrite brings the true ending back inside this story: read the twelve names. This article follows the new clues; the old Echo-12, five-site map and 222-year cycle are no longer part of Room 404.

1. Three frequencies, three layers

FrequencyWhere it appearsWhat it isWhat it is not
404 HzUnder the floor of 404, Zhang Wei's spectrum analysis, the server logThe carrier hum of the basement rack. The room number is an address, not a frequency; the company chose GNS-404 to lean on the coincidenceNot "the frequency of the door," and not an entrance to a cross-title network
87.9 / 88.0 FMThe radio page's frequency tunerThe public broadcast carrier. 87.9 is the normal programme; 88.0 is the anomaly. Both the 2003 and 2023 inserts arrive through this lineNot a sound inside 404; it is only the road that carries a voice out
18.98 HzZhou Hui's tape, Zhang Wei's blog, the 2003 technical noteAn old measurement in the infrasound range; it explains why the building feels wrongNot the final answer, and not a synchronisation frequency for seven sites

Treating those three as one "global frequency network" was the old article's biggest problem. In the rewrite, 404 Hz is the room's carrier, 87.9 is the public exit, and 18.98 Hz is an old measurement. They are not on the same layer.

2. 2003: the first 03:04

In the September 1, 2003 transcript of City Night Talk, the technical department marks one segment as "not a human operation":

"They are below. Room 404 is just the signal receiver."

Reading: this is where the whole line starts. It does not say "door" or "network." It describes a structure: Room 404 is the receiver, and the real thing is below. The basement rack Lin Xia later sees in the dark-web diagram is the physical proof of that sentence.

The 2003 voiceprint matches no known person. It reads more like the system speaking, or an old recording being retranscribed.

3. 2023: the second 03:04

On August 17, 2023, the station was off air for district maintenance. At 03:04:04 the backup transmitter started by itself and broadcast an 11-second male voice:

"Xia, don't come down. On day 404, leave."

The technical report says: the signal came from the direction of Qingcheng Garden Building 4; the voiceprint matches missing person Lin Yuan at 98.7%; Lin Yuan's last located time was 2023-08-17 03:04, in basement level 3.

Reading: this is not the system speaking. It is Lin Yuan. He has just connected to the carrier and can still push one sentence out. It is also the first time the private motive appears as a voice — not narration, not a diary, but her brother telling her not to come down.

4. 013: not data, a living man

The server log entry for 2023-08-17 03:04:04 reads:

CARRIER 013 ACQUIRED · subject L.Y. · all nodes HOLDING

The carrier status page adds:

Partition contents: an 11:08 loop (404 Hz bed + pronunciations of the twelve names) and one note: "Don't switch it off. They all go with it."

Reading: 013 is not on the twelve-person register because he is not a tenant. The twelve tenants are extracted minds; 013 is the living person using his neural signal to renew them. The system gives him a partition number and no register page — which is why Lin Xia cannot find Lin Yuan in the register.

Why the power cannot simply be cut: cutting it kills the carrier first, and then the twelve datasets decay within 48 hours. That is the cost of the "pull the power" ending and the reason "read the names" exists.

5. Why the true ending is "read the names," not "tune the frequency"

The true ending: take the recorder to FM87.9 and, at 03:04, read the twelve names and "Lin Yuan" aloud.

The system only recognises numbers; people recognise names.

Reading: the system files the twelve as #001–#012; names are not in its index. What Lin Xia can do is not dial a mysterious number but use the public carrier to send twelve names out, so the system can no longer file them as IDs. This is where the private motive and the mechanism finally meet: her brother is the carrier below, she is the broadcast above; one holds the door, the other reads the names.

So the "true" ending is not a seven-world reunion and not a doorway into another game. It answers one question: can data become people again?

6. What about the "network" rumour?

The game does contain characters speculating about a "global frequency network": forum posts, old files, Zhang Wei's blog. The rewrite treats them as:

If another work uses 52.9 Hz, 18.7 Hz or 103.9 MHz, that is that work's own setting. It is not the same network as 404's 404 Hz. Treating each work as a standalone story makes each one's private motive easier to see.
