Buried Summer Walkthrough: All Three Endings

Spoiler warning: this article prints the tree-hole password, the six tree-hole entries, the six readable letters and all three endings. If you have not played yet, read only "How the password is derived" and "If you are stuck".
Every number here — the 9 diary entries, 15 guestbook messages, 5 album pages, 6 tree-hole entries, 6 readable letters, 10 clues and 3 endings — can be found on the corresponding screen in the game, and the unlock and ending triggers were checked against the actual wording shown in the game. The four screenshots were taken from the live build on 20 October 2026.
What counts as finishing
Buried Summer has no search box, no timer and no fail state. There are four steps:
- Piece the tree-hole password together from the Class Diary, the Duty Roster and the Guestbook;
- Open the Tree Hole and expand and read all six entries;
- The Tin Box screen appears; you can open letters inside it;
- Make the final choice on the Tin Box screen and enter one of three endings.
In particular:
- Only reading all six tree-hole entries opens the box. Entering the password and not expanding the entries does not count;
- The hidden Reply ending requires opening letter number 30 in the Tin Box first. If you don't, the third choice stays greyed out;
- The 10 clues are a collection count, not a gate. You can choose an ending at 4/10;
- A choice goes straight to an ending and cannot be undone.

How the password 062423 is derived
The password is not a birthday, and it is not a class number. It is written in three places, and you need all three:
- Diary, 24 June 2009, "Buried Under the Third Brick": the author is number 23, Chen Jiayi. That is the burial day; she and number 05, Zheng Yi, are the duty students that week.
- Duty Roster: for the week of 6/22 – 6/28, the duty students are "23 Chen Jiayi" and "05 Zheng Yi".
- Guestbook, 24 June 2009, 19:12, Chen Jiayi (No. 23): "I set the tree hole password: the month and day, plus my student number, six digits. Don't write it on paper. Keep it in your head."
So:
- The month and day: 06 + 24 = 0624
- Her student number: 23
- Together: 062423
It is not 20090624, not 062405 (05 is Zheng Yi, not the person who set the password), and not Xiaoman's 07. The input tolerates spaces, hyphens and full-width digits, but there is only one correct six-digit answer. After two wrong attempts the page shows a hint.
The shortest route
| Step | What to do on screen | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | On the Class Diary screen, open the 24 June 2009 entry | gets the date and that week's duty students |
| 2 | On the Duty Roster screen, read the 6/22 – 6/28 row | confirms number 23 Chen Jiayi and number 05 Zheng Yi |
| 3 | On the Guestbook screen, read the 24 June 2009, 19:12 message | gets the "month and day + my student number" rule |
| 4 | Go to the Tree Hole screen, enter 062423, click "Open" | opens the door |
| 5 | On the Tree Hole screen, expand and read all six entries (it shows "n / 6 read") | the Tin Box appears |
| 6 | Go to the Tin Box screen; for the hidden ending, open the envelope numbered "30" | unlocks the Reply choice |
| 7 | On the Tin Box screen, choose an ending | goes to that ending; cannot be undone |
The 9 diary entries: the timeline
On the Class Diary screen, opening an entry counts as reading it. The nine entries are in date order:
| Date | Author | Title | What it gives |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2009-06-01 | Xiaoman (No. 07) | The Last Children's Day | background: Xiaoman wants to leave something behind at the primary school |
| 2009-06-15 | Zhou Zhou (No. 11) | Graduation Photo | background: number 30 Lin Yuan is seventh from the left in the back row; the photo is in the album |
| 2009-06-23 | Xiaoman (No. 07) | The Tin Box | 30 letters in student-number order; 2026.7.1 written inside the lid |
| 2009-06-24 | Chen Jiayi (No. 23) | Buried Under the Third Brick | clues: burial date, that day's duty students |
| 2009-07-01 | Lin Yuan (No. 30) | Summer Break | background: Lin Yuan moves away the next day without telling anyone |
| 2011-06-24 | Duty Student | The Tree Is Still There | clue: someone has come back every year for seventeen years |
| 2017-06-24 | Duty Student | The Eighth Year | clue: the same "comes back every year" |
| 2019-06-24 | Duty Student | The Tenth Year | background: more people came back; Teacher Wang opened a shop |
| 2026-06-30 | Xiaoman (No. 07) | The Last Update | clues: demolition notice, thirty emails; she has the box back |
Only two entries really matter for the puzzle: 24 June gives the two numbers, and 30 June explains that the box is safe and the site is about to close. The other seven are the timeline: why someone comes back every 24 June, and why 2026 is different.
15 messages, 5 album pages, the duty roster
Guestbook: six messages worth reading
The Guestbook has 15 messages, from 2009 to 2026, with the newest at the bottom. The ones that matter are:
| Time | Who | Key content |
|---|---|---|
| 2009-06-24 19:12 | Chen Jiayi (No. 23) | password rule: that day's month and day + my student number, six digits |
| 2009-07-01 21:40 | Lin Yuan (No. 30) | "I leave tomorrow. The box can watch over things for me. See you in 2026." |
| 2011-06-24 16:22 | Anonymous | "The tree is still there." |
| 2019-06-24 23:47 | Zheng Yi (No. 05) | "In Beijing, working overtime. Took half a day off today and came up to look." |
| 2026-06-28 18:02 | Xiaoman (No. 07) | "The classroom building is getting demolished. The box is at my mom's place. I've brought it back. July 1, under the tree." |
| 2026-06-30 22:51 | Xiaoman (No. 07) | "I sent thirty emails. Come or don't come, either is fine. The password is still the same one." |
Most of the rest give the same "these seventeen years" clue: it is not one person coming back, but duty students from different years leaving one line each year. The last anonymous message, from 24 June 2025, reads: "My kid asked me why I have to look at a very old web page every year on this day. I said, because Mom's name from when she was little is on it."
Album: two of the five pages have clues
The Album has five photographs; open one for the full image, with the caption below:
| Album title | Clue |
|---|---|
| Graduation Photo · 2009.6.15 | you are number 30: seventh from the left in the back row, white shirt |
| The Plane Tree · 2009.6.24 | the carved words and the position of the third brick |
| The Tin Box · 2009.6.23 | 30 letters inside, in student-number order |
| Playground · 2009.6.24, Rain | burial day; the hole is north of the third brick |
| Classroom · 2026.6.28 | the last day anyone photographed this classroom |
Duty roster: the other half of the password
The Duty Roster runs five weeks, two people per week. For 6/22 – 6/28 it is "23 Chen Jiayi, 05 Zheng Yi". The line at the top — "Duty students: lock the door, wipe the blackboard, remember the tree hole password" — is not decoration. It explains who owns the password: the duty student of that week set it, so use her number 23, not Zheng Yi's 05 and not Xiaoman's 07.
The six tree-hole entries: read all six to open the box
The Tree Hole screen was built in 2009; only someone who knows the password can enter. It now holds six entries, dated from 2015 to 2026, each showing a date, a title and a signature. The six entries are:
| Date | Title | Author (as shown) | Key content |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2015-06-24 | College Entrance Exam Results | Chen Jiayi · No. 23 | did badly, did not become a nurse; came up to see if the site was still there |
| 2019-06-24 | New Phone | Zhou Zhou · No. 11 | found the password in an old phone's notes app, almost deleted it |
| 2019-03-18 | Back at School for Student Teaching | He Yu · No. 18 | student teaching at Wutong Road Primary; the tree has grown, the third brick is still there |
| 2019-06-24 | Took Half a Day Off | Zheng Yi · No. 05 | takes leave every year just to confirm that someone else remembers |
| 2023-06-24 | The Box Is at My Mom's Place | Xiaoman · No. 07 | her mother dug the box up during the 2011 renovation and kept it for twelve years |
| 2026-06-24 | See You Tomorrow | Xiaoman · No. 07 | box recovered; 30 emails sent, 6 returned; July 1, four in the afternoon, under the tree |
Read all six (open every entry) before the Tin Box screen appears. Opening the door without reading is not enough; missing one is not enough either. Below the entries it always reads "The box appears only after all six entries are read."

The tin box and the six readable letters
The Tin Box screen is framed as "thirty letters, in student-number order", but the game lets you open six:
| No. | Signed | Key content |
|---|---|---|
| — | Teacher Wang | slipped in secretly; asks whether anyone wrote that they want to be someone whose word counts |
| 07 | Xiaoman | if everyone forgot, dig it up alone; dig it up, then bury it back |
| 23 | Chen Jiayi | did you become a nurse; you promised the class ice cream |
| 11 | Zhou Zhou | stop writing the password in your phone notes; remember to treat |
| 18 | He Yu | you are going to be a teacher; don't run over the bell; thank Teacher Wang for me |
| 30 | Lin Yuan | your own letter: "The day you left, you didn't say goodbye to anyone. The box said it for you." Last line: those instant noodles in your desk that day, I ate them |
Letter 30 is the key to the hidden ending. On the Tin Box screen, open the envelope numbered "30" and read it, and the third choice — "Take only letter number 30, leave one line in the guestbook, and go" — becomes clickable. Without reading letter 30, only the first two endings are available.

The three endings
On the Tin Box screen, the three choices are the game's own words:
| Ending | Trigger | Title and close |
|---|---|---|
| Ending One · Reunion | after the box appears, choose "Open the box, photograph the letters, and put them on the website — so the whole class comes back to look." | "Thirty Letters": eleven people come back, Teacher Wang brings popsicles; the tree is still cut down, but the site moves to a new address and the homepage gains "2009— " |
| Ending Two · Bury It Back | after the box appears, choose "Don't open it. Bury the box again in the flower bed of the new classroom building, and tell no one." | "The New Flower Bed": no bricks counted, nothing carved; the site closes at the end of the month; years later you only remember the visits stopped at 2147 |
| Hidden Ending · Reply | open letter 30 in the Tin Box first, then choose "Take only letter number 30, leave one line in the guestbook, and go" | "One Line": you write "Number 30, Lin Yuan: I'm back." You didn't call everyone back, but you brought the 2009 version of yourself home |
The three closing lines are:
- Reunion: "Some promises aren't made to be kept. They're made so the people who walked away know that someone once waited."
- Bury It Back: "Some things get buried not because they don't matter, but because you don't want to lose them a second time."
- Reply: "You didn't call everyone back, but you brought the 2009 version of yourself home."
The choice cannot be undone. To see all three, start separate runs, or reload from a point before the choice; there is no built-in rewind.
All 10 clues
Clues are not a gate, but 10/10 requires specific pages:
| Clue | Where to see it in the game |
|---|---|
| The Day the Box Was Buried | Class Diary, 2009-06-24, "Buried Under the Third Brick" |
| That Day's Duty Students | same entry, or the 6/22 – 6/28 row of the Duty Roster |
| The Tree Hole Password Rule | Guestbook, 2009-06-24 19:12, Chen Jiayi (No. 23) |
| These Seventeen Years | Class Diary 2011 or 2017, any one; or several guestbook messages or tree-hole entries |
| Where the Box Went | Tree Hole, "The Box Is at My Mom's Place" (2023-06-24) |
| What's Inside the Box | Album, "The Tin Box · 2009.6.23" |
| You Are Number 30 | Album, "Graduation Photo · 2009.6.15" |
| Demolition Notice | Class Diary 2026-06-30 or Tree Hole, "See You Tomorrow" (2026-06-24) |
| Thirty Emails | same two places |
| The Appointment | Tree Hole, "See You Tomorrow" (2026-06-24): July 1, 2026, four in the afternoon, under the plane tree |
The easiest to miss are "Where the Box Went" and "The Appointment": they exist only inside the tree hole, so the password must be solved first. The other eight can be collected outside.
If you are stuck
Password wrong? The answer is 062423. The rule is "that day's month and day + the student number of the duty student who set it": 06 + 24 + 23. Don't add the year, don't use 05 (Zheng Yi), and don't use 07 (Xiaoman).
Tree hole open but no box? Entering the password is not enough. Expand and read all six entries. The page shows "n / 6 read"; only at 6 / 6 does the Tin Box screen appear.
Hidden ending greyed out? On the Tin Box screen, open the envelope numbered "30" and read it. After that, "Take only letter number 30" unlocks.
Why only six of thirty letters? The fiction is thirty; the game exposes six readable letters, and number 30 is yours. Do not look for the other twenty-four; they are not interactive.
What time is the meeting? Tree Hole, "See You Tomorrow" (2026-06-24) says "July 1, four in the afternoon." You arrive at 3:40, which is why the Tin Box screen opens "1 July, 3:40 p.m." Four is the appointment for the class, not your arrival time.
